Breaking Into National Markets

Review time! Twilight by Stephenie Meyer.

I admire Stephenie. All right, I'm jealous of her too. She's managed to go national where all the money is. Let's face it, few authors make money, fewer still if you publish in the LDS world. The readership is just too small to support an author.

What I would love to see is LDS characters being accepted nationally, like Catholic and Jewish characters are.

But it would take an author who has already broken into the national market and been wildly successful with a strong readership to do it.

And I suspect that at this point Stephenie is enjoying the ride. It's good to see and LDS author join Anne Perry and Orson Scott Card in the mainstream.

I wonder if Stephanie Meyer may have shot herself in the foot with Breaking Dawn. I just finished it this morning and was even more disappointed than with her other Twilight books. It was a little indulgent, but then maybe that is what her audience wants since they seem to be simple romance stories set in a fantasy background. Her descriptive writing is great, but when I finish her books I just think, "huh." as compared with Harry Potter that I was obsessing about where the author would go next, and amazed at JK Rowling's ability to intertwine little details into major facets of later stories.
